Silhouette Soft Threads is a new generation of facial threads used for non-invasive facial reshaping and has recently become available in Europe. The treatment, which involves the use of biocompatible and fully absorbable threads, can be a valid alternative for patients with mild degrees of laxity of the lower face (jowls and marionette lines). This is often ideal for patients who desire refinement of their facial features without surgical approaches and with minimal downtime.
The Silhouette Soft threads are inserted using a fine needle and held in place with absorbable cones oriented in opposite directions (bidirectional). The unique advantage of this technique relies on bypassing the need for skin incision and deeper fixation as is usually required with the previous generations of threads. One or more sutures may be applied on each target area depending on the amount of facial laxity.
By redirecting the soft tissues across the desired vectors and balancing the tension along the length of the thread, an immediate and discreet lifting effect is achieved. The technique does not address the texture of the skin but counterbalances gravitational descent and can ameliorate jowling, marionette lines, prominent nasolabial folds and submental laxity.
In addition, the threads offer a certain degree of regenerative effect by enhancing biostimulation of collagen production. The principal component, Polylactic acid (PLA), is a biocompatible and fully absorbable agent, which has several applications within the medical field, from absorbable sutures to orthopedic materials, vascular stents and biostimulatory fillers. Once the thread is applied, PLA acts on the deeper layers of the dermis and naturally stimulates the body so that it produces its own collagen. Despite the biodegradability of the thread, longer lasting results can be expected, as the internal healing process that takes place around the cones will replace the lifting effect of the thread.
The main attraction of the technique is the lack of invasiveness, short recovery time and above all, the ability to address areas of the face that are usually tackled with a surgical procedure. It is important to note this procedure is not a substitute for a facelift, however it can achieve some of the benefits in the short term.
The procedure can be performed within 30 to 45 minutes depending on the degree of laxity and the amount of threads required. Slight swelling, redness or bruising may sometimes be observed, but these disappear within days. There can also be a slight wrinkling of the skin (required for optimization of the treatment) but this disappears very quickly. Dr Papageorgiou recommends a combined approach with other non-invasive procedures like Ultherapy (microfocused ultrasound) to enhance the rejuvenative effect.
